Voter Concerns
Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has appealed to the public to join a demonstration in Mumbai on October 2 to safeguard voting rights and address issues tied to electoral rolls. In a video posted on Instagram, she asked supporters to assemble at Shivaji Park by 4 pm on Gandhi Jayanti. She stressed that a ballot is a citizen's voice and tool to shape the nation's future, warning against situations where names vanish from registries or lists undergo alteration.
Denied Permission
Azmi noted that authorities did not grant official approval for the gathering despite multiple requests. Even so, she urged citizens to leave their homes and question the system to protect democracy. The planned Mumbai event follows an earlier demonstration in Delhi led by the Cockroach Janta Party over exam issues, and ties into broader friction regarding the Special Intensive Revision process and electoral lists.
Wider Demands
The Cockroach Janta Party, set up by Abhijeet Dipke, has called for a countrywide agitation starting in Mumbai. The organisation is pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the 2025 voter roll updates, and more openness in choosing the next poll chief. The group claims that roughly 13 crore voters were dropped during the revision drive, linking this to vote margins from the 2024 general elections, though these claims are allegations by the group and not established findings against the Election Commission. Mumbai Police turned down the request to hold the gathering at Shivaji Park due to traffic and assembly rules, but organisers stated they would push ahead anyway.
Context
Public demonstrations and political debates over electoral rolls often arise during major administrative revisions of voter databases. Citizen groups frequently use public spaces to voice concerns about administrative transparency when official permissions for large gatherings are withheld.
