Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has appointed Abdul Mateen Siddiqui as the new president of the party unit in Uttarakhand. Siddiqui, who is 66 years old and from Nainital district, replaces Shubham Giri. This marks the first time the Samajwadi Party has chosen a Muslim leader for the top post in the state unit.

Election Focus

Siddiqui has previously served as the party's state general secretary and state in-charge, and he contested the Assembly elections from Haldwani in 2007 and 2012. The party has asked him to focus on around 20 Muslim-dominated seats across Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, and Nainital districts. He will also work in the bordering western Uttar Pradesh districts for the upcoming state elections. Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary stated that Siddiqui was chosen because Muslims make up a major part of the electorate in these plains districts.

Leadership Change

Shubham Giri, a 34-year-old mahant who wears saffron and lives in a Haridwar ashram, was named the working president in January. Chaudhary mentioned that Giri's performance was not satisfactory, though Giri has now been made the state unit co-incharge. Giri stated that some party members were upset with him and that he requested relief from the role to focus on preparing to contest from the Pirankaliyar seat in Haridwar district.

Context

Political parties in northern states frequently adjust their leadership and social coalitions ahead of assembly elections to appeal to key voter demographics. In Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh, parties must balance diverse communities to build winning electoral alliances across regional boundaries.
