The Leadership Change
The leadership shift took place on Friday after Amrinder Singh Raja Warring stepped down from the post. Warring blamed AICC Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot for his departure from the position.
Political Journey
Pargat Singh previously served as a Punjab Police officer, reaching the rank of Superintendent of Police before entering electoral politics. He won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat in 2012 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket by defeating Congress candidate Jagbir Singh Brar. He was later suspended by the SAD in July 2016 and quit the party after accusing Sukhbir Badal of betraying voter trust. He then joined Navjot Singh Sidhu and the Bains brothers in the Awaaz-e-Punjab front before moving to the Indian National Congress and winning his seat again in 2017.
Ministerial Tenure and Roles
During the brief tenure of Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister, Pargat Singh served as a Cabinet minister from September 2021 to March 2022. His portfolios included School Education, Higher Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, and NRI Affairs. During the 2022 Assembly elections, he held his seat for Congress by defeating fellow former hockey international Surinder Singh Sodhi by roughly 5,800 votes. He currently serves as the AICC secretary in charge of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sports Background
Born in Mithapur, Jalandhar, Pargat Singh played as a full-back and earned a reputation as one of India's top defenders. He played for India at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Barcelona in 1992, and Atlanta in 1996, captaining the team in the latter two games. He also served as India's flag-bearer at the Atlanta opening ceremony in 1996. His honors include a bronze medal at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, a silver at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, the Arjuna Award in 1989, and the Padma Shri in 1998. After retiring from play, he coached the men's national team and served as general secretary of Hockey Punjab in 2017.
