The Congress party has appointed former India hockey captain and sitting MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Congress. This announcement came on Friday just hours after Amrinder Singh Raja Warring resigned from the post and blamed AICC Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot for his exit. Pargat Singh is 62 years old and a former Punjab Police officer who rose to the rank of Superintendent of Police before leaving service to enter politics. He has represented the Jalandhar Cantonment seat since 2012, first winning on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket before joining the Congress party. During Charanjit Singh Channi's brief tenure as Chief Minister, Singh served as a Cabinet minister holding portfolios including School Education, Higher Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, and NRI Affairs. In the 2022 Assembly elections, he retained his seat for the Congress by defeating fellow former hockey international Surinder Singh Sodhi by about 5,800 votes. He currently serves as the AICC secretary in charge of Jammu and Kashmir. Before his political career, Singh was widely regarded as one of India's best defenders in hockey and captained the national team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, serving as India's flag-bearer at the 1996 opening ceremony. He also played in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, won a bronze medal at the 1986 Asian Games, and secured a silver at the 1990 Asian Games. The government honored him with the Arjuna Award in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1998, and he later coached the men's national team and served as general secretary of Hockey Punjab.
