Confirmed by a second source: NDTV Marathi
Thackeray faction Thane unit chief Pradeep Purnekar was shot dead two days ago, sparking widespread anger in the city. Following the killing, the victim's son Ram Purnekar accused former mayor Minakshi Shinde and her husband Rajendra Shinde of involvement, prompting police to add their names to a supplementary FIR. MP Sanjay Raut stated that the killers had visited the tower where Minakshi Shinde lives two days before the attack, according to Ram Purnekar's claims.
Police Action
Sanjay Raut and Aaditya Thackeray visited Thane to meet the grieving family and held discussions with the police commissioner. Raut told media that the victim was killed in Thane after being shot seven times in a political dispute. Ram Purnekar provided photographs to police showing a close link between the suspects and Rajendra Shinde. Senior police officials, including Joint Police Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner Prashant Kadam, and Dubey, assured the leaders that the investigation will proceed legally without pressure and that two people have already been arrested.
Motive and Allegations
Pradeep Purnekar had previously contested elections against Minakshi Shinde and led opposition against a local drug gang and a cluster development project. Raut criticized the current law and order situation in Thane, comparing it unfavorably to Beed, and questioned Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. BJP leader Sanjay Kelkar and a BJP deputy mayor have also written letters to police demanding a thorough inquiry into the matter.
Context
Political tensions often run high in local civic disputes, particularly when rival factions clash over municipal elections and urban development projects. High-profile murder investigations involving local political figures routinely draw intense media scrutiny and pressure from opposition parties demanding swift judicial accountability.
