A business jet crashed into a residential neighbourhood in Florida on Sunday, leaving a large crater in the pavement and killing all nine people on board. The Learjet 60 aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was flying toward the Bahamas when the disaster occurred.

Crash Details

The plane came down in Palm Beach County near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, roughly nine miles from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. Video footage captured the aircraft nose-diving from the sky and exploding into a massive ball of flames near a major road, just metres away from passing vehicles. The impact shattered concrete, left pieces of debris scattered across the street, and caused a power outage in the nearby area lasting about two hours.

Official Response

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the incident a horrific tragedy and confirmed that all nine individuals on board died, with no survivors. The Federal Aviation Administration sent a team to support an independent investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board. Airport spokesperson Jim Reynolds identified the aircraft by its tail number as N722BD, though officials have not yet released the identities or names of the passengers and crew.

Context

Residential plane crashes in populated areas pose significant challenges for emergency responders and often trigger extensive federal aviation investigations into mechanical failures, weather conditions, or pilot actions. Local authorities in Palm Beach County declared a mass casualty incident while fire crews and sheriff deputies secured the site and urged motorists to avoid nearby roads.
