All nine people on board a private business jet died when the aircraft plummeted into a residential neighbourhood in southern Florida, erupting into a massive fireball near a busy roadway. The Learjet 60 crashed on Sunday local time in Palm Beach County near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.
Flight Details
The plane had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was flying toward the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Texas airport, confirmed the flight carried the tail number N722BD and called the incident a tragedy, though he could not immediately state who was on the flight. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that there were no survivors and noted on social media that an FAA team was travelling to the site to aid crash investigators.
Ground Impact
Video footage recorded by people inside passing cars captured the aircraft dropping rapidly from the sky before striking the ground near a major road and bursting into flames, leaving a large crater in the pavement close to a utility pole. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office shut down roads in both directions and told drivers to stay away while firefighters and emergency workers hurried to the location. A nearby worker reported that power in the area cut out for about two hours after the accident.
Context
Plane crashes involving small business jets are subject to rigorous federal investigations by safety authorities to determine mechanical, weather, or human factors. West Palm Beach is situated approximately 12 kilometres from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, placing the site of the accident in a prominent South Florida region.
