A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed into a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all aboard. The jet had taken off from Austin‑Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to the Bahamas. The Federal Aviation Administration said a team will assist the National Transportation Safety Board in probing the cause. The aircraft nosedived near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, striking the pavement and exploding into a fireball that scorched the road but missed nearby homes. The tail number was N722BD. Both directions of the road were closed and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office asked motorists to stay away. Firefighters arrived, put out the blaze and a nearby resident reported a power outage lasting about two hours. Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for Austin‑Bergstrom Airport, described the incident as a tragedy and noted the flight was private, but offered no details on the passengers. No immediate cause for the crash was released.
Context
Private business‑jet accidents are uncommon, and when they occur investigators from the FAA and NTSB work together to determine the cause. The crash highlights the challenges of flying over densely populated areas where even a brief loss of control can threaten nearby homes and roadways.
