Chennai Super Kings could part ways with 20-year-old all-rounder Prashant Veer to free up funds ahead of the December 16 auction. Veer, an Uttar Pradesh left-arm spinner, joined the franchise for Rs 14.2 crore alongside fellow 20-year-old Kartik Sharma during the Abu Dhabi auction.

Player Performances

During the season, Veer managed 90 runs across six matches and five innings while failing to take a single wicket, with a top score of 43 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Sharma recorded 295 runs over 11 matches at a 32.77 average, including a high score of 71 against Lucknow Super Giants. Because Sharma delivered steady middle-order returns, the management may choose to keep him, though a team official noted that final decisions on retentions remain pending.

Auction Strategy

Despite the possibility of releasing Veer, the franchise reportedly hopes to buy him back at a reduced cost. Super Kings currently hold Rs 2.4 crore in their purse, which will increase to Rs 7.4 crore once the Rs 5 crore annual salary cap increment applies. Franchises must finalize their player lists by November 15 for the mini-auction in Goa.

Punjab Kings Updates

In a separate development, Punjab Kings leadership has denied rumors regarding a potential trade for Marco Jansen, whom Dale Steyn previously called the world's best cricketer. Team officials confirmed they have no plans to release the South African all-rounder, who recently earned Player of the Series honors in a three-Test tour against Australia. Jansen secured nine wickets in 12 matches last season alongside 51 runs across five innings. He currently holds the top spot in ICC Test bowling and all-rounder rankings.

Context

Uncapped Indian domestic players often command massive auction prices despite having limited international experience, creating high financial stakes for franchises. Teams must balance heavy investments in young talent against overall squad requirements and strict purse limits.
