Delhi traders suffered business losses estimated between ten and eleven thousand crore rupees due to the INDIA bloc's mega rally at Ramlila Maidan, according to the Chamber of Trade and Industry. CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal stated on Sunday that roughly eighty percent of shops in twenty to twenty-five major markets near the venue remained closed. Around two and a half lakh out of three lakh shops stayed shut because of panic over expected crowds of one million people and thousands of vehicles. The disruptions hit hard during the peak Diwali season, with Dhanteras shopping just four days away. Before the event, the trade body wrote four letters urging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to postpone the march until after Diwali, warning that Ramlila Maidan lacked parking for even two hundred large buses. Goyal added that three to four lakh customers, suppliers, and dealers from nearby towns failed to arrive, while five thousand goods-carrying vehicles from industrial hubs could not operate. The opposition march against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar began at the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction and ended at Ramlila Maidan.

Political Clash

Ruling party leaders strongly criticized the opposition for ignoring traders' pleas. Union home minister Amit Shah accused Rahul Gandhi of holding the rally on a dark anniversary day and disrupting livelihoods. Union minister JP Nadda claimed the Congress-led bloc wanted to paralyze Delhi and create chaos during a sacred festive season. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi blamed the ruling party for forcibly shutting down shops in Connaught Place, while Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury dismissed claims of harm as false rumors. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh contradicted the trade body's figures entirely, claiming the rally actually boosted sales and that opponents spread false fear to distract from vote theft issues.

Context

Ramlila Maidan is a historic ground in central Delhi frequently used for massive political gatherings and public protests due to its large capacity. Large-scale political demonstrations in dense urban areas often cause major traffic diversions, temporary public transport restrictions, and commercial slowdowns in nearby markets. Peak festival shopping periods in India represent a critical window for small retail and wholesale businesses to generate a significant share of their annual revenue.
