Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed local officials to take strict safety steps as Cyclone Murasu turns into a severe storm, with the Bapatla district facing the highest risk. During a video conference on Monday, November 2, 2026, attended by Bapatla Collector Vinod Kumar V, the Chief Minister warned that heavy floodwater will flow into irrigation canals from upstream areas like Guntur, Palnadu, Prakasam, and Markapuram.

Official Preparations

Mr. Naidu ordered authorities to watch canal bunds closely, get ready for four days of heavy water inflows, move people out of low-lying spots, and set up relief camps. Officials must also fill up reservoirs, tanks, and ponds across south coastal and Rayalaseema regions using proper water management. The administration expects heavy rains and winds to impact the region, while officials noted that power poles in south coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema could be affected. District Collector Vinod Kumar stated that rainfall in the district has been 30% below normal, but heavy rain is expected to last for five days. Authorities have found 74 weak spots including canals, roads, and tank bunds, while keeping about 1,000 power poles and machinery ready.

Closures and Safety

All government, private, and corporate schools and colleges in Bapatla district are closed on November 2 and 3 due to the heavy rain warning. Collector Vinod Kumar announced the holiday to keep students safe. Officials added that while Murasu might cause less damage than earlier Cyclone Arnab, full precautions are in place, including sending 50 workers to the Godavari districts for power repair work.

Context

Coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh often face severe cyclonic storms during the northeast monsoon season, requiring advanced preparation by the state disaster management machinery. State authorities routinely coordinate with district administrations to evacuate vulnerable populations and secure critical infrastructure ahead of heavy downpours.
