The Government of India has officially standardised the names of 28 places and geographical features across Ladakh on the official Survey of India map. This step was taken in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh to ensure accurate recognition and build greater public awareness. The updated map is now available for public viewing on the Survey of India website. This notification follows a similar recent exercise by India to standardise place names in Arunachal Pradesh.
Geographical Features
The newly standardised list covers a wide variety of terrain types in the region. It includes 11 peaks, five mountains, six land areas, two glaciers, two passes, one valley, one river, one lake, and one other water body. Among the specific peaks added to the official map are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri, and Maheshvara Ri. The list of mountains features Karun Pir, Drak Karpo, and Jolmori. The classified land areas include Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung, and Shamal Lungpa. Parpik and Skamri Glacier are the two glaciers included, while Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass represent the passes. Finally, the features list contains Shkorga Valley, the Yangpa River, Guru Rinpoche as a lake, and a hot spring classified as a water body.
Context
Ladakh shares a long border with China along the Line of Actual Control, where military tensions and troop build-ups have persisted since 2020. Official mapping and renaming initiatives in border regions often serve administrative and sovereignty purposes. Standardising geographical names helps governments maintain clear official records of remote territories.
