The University of Delhi has given a one-time exemption from its 28-credit promotion rule for students who entered in the 2025-26 academic year. Students who have finished one year of study will not need to earn at least 28 out of 44 credits to move forward.
The Rule Changes
The DU Examination Branch shared this update in a notification that partially changes older orders from July 21 and September 2, 2025. This exemption applies only to the 2025-26 batch and is a one-time step. The university has not permanently ended the 28-credit rule for all undergraduate students.
How It Works
Under the usual credit system, students have 44 credits across two semesters in a year. The previous rule forced students to secure 28 of those 44 credits to get promoted to the next year. The new notification removes this specific hurdle for the 2025-26 batch. A student with 27 credits after one year will no longer be blocked from promotion.
Context
This update is part of changes made under the NEP Undergraduate Curriculum Framework-2022. The university first introduced the 28-credit rule in July 2025, moved its start to the 2025-26 batch in September 2025, and has now granted this single-batch exemption.
