India secured fourth place in the Asian Games standings after a late gold medal surge in the final days of the competition. The country finished the multi-sport event with 85 medals overall, including 21 golds, 27 silvers and 37 bronzes.

Turnaround

For the first 12 days, the Indian contingent managed only 10 gold medals as disciplines like athletics, badminton and shooting fell short of past performances. However, the tally jumped significantly with six golds on Friday and five more on Saturday to edge past Uzbekistan for fourth place on a count of extra silver medals.

Key Winners

Seventeen-year-old recurve archer Kumkum Mohod claimed an individual gold after overturning a deficit against Oh Yejin. Golfer Pranavi Urs overcame an early triple bogey to secure a historic women's individual title. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat came back from behind against North Korea's Han Chong-Song in the 57 kg final to win gold. In cricket, Abhishek Sharma scored 61 runs and Tilak Varma added an unbeaten 51 to help the men's team defeat Pakistan by 19 runs for the gold medal.

Hockey Triumph

The Indian men's hockey team sealed the final gold of the campaign with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia. Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner in a match that also earned the squad direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Vice-captain Hardik Singh noted that the win provided immense mental and physical relief following a difficult stretch.

Context

Continental multi-sport events like the Asian Games serve as major milestones for athletes bridging one Olympic cycle to the next. Securing direct qualification spots in team sports early helps national federations plan training camps and tournaments without the pressure of global qualifiers later.
