Video Removal And Ban
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has banned actor Dia Mirza from all civic events and official BMC platforms following a controversy over a clean Diwali video. The civic body posted the clip on November one to urge residents against bursting crackers, but took it down after a backlash from BJP leaders.
Mayor's Objections
Mayor Tawde stated that the celebrity list for civic campaigns must be cleared by her in future. She accused Mirza of opposing Hindutva, noting past stances on the Narmada project and statements concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tawde added that Hindus do not need lessons on how to celebrate Diwali.
Actor's Response
Dia Mirza defended the campaign in a conversation with ANI. She asked why a public interest video recorded at the request of the Bombay High Court and the BMC was being criticized. Mirza emphasized that air pollution is a serious concern and every effort to reduce it supports public health.
Context
The BMC campaign aimed to tackle air and noise pollution during the festival season by promoting eco-friendly celebrations. Civic bodies frequently collaborate with public figures and UN Goodwill Ambassadors to spread awareness on environmental issues. Political disagreements often surface when official municipal messaging intersects with cultural traditions and public figures.
