Tamil Nadu is launching a new pilot program to improve mental healthcare for women during and after pregnancy by offering screenings at local health centers. The project is called Thai Manam, and it aims to spot mental health issues like depression early so mothers can get the right support on time. Medical officers and Village Health Nurses are currently receiving special training to handle these screenings across four specific blocks in Villupuram district: Kanai, Koliyanur, Vallam, and Mugaiyur. Experts from the Institute of Mental Health note that worldwide studies show between ten percent and twenty percent of women suffer from depression during pregnancy.
Context
Global health studies show that emotional challenges during and after pregnancy are common, yet they often go unnoticed without proper local screening programs. Training primary healthcare workers like village nurses helps bring mental healthcare directly to rural communities where specialist doctors are not always nearby. This project brings together multiple public health groups to build a stronger safety net for expecting mothers.
