The Crash

Two helicopters collided on Tuesday morning while trying to land at the Pheriche helipad in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. The accident happened at 8:11 AM as aircraft from Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty attempted to touch down at the same spot. According to officials, one helicopter was coming from Lukla while the other was returning from Gorakshep near the Everest base camp. Initial reports state that the rotor blades of both machines hit each other during the landing maneuver.

Casualties

The crash resulted in the death of a 47-year-old Indian tourist named Vasant Kumar Balaramaramadu, who was riding in the Fishtail Air helicopter. A 53-year-old New Zealand citizen of Indian origin named Shailesh Krishan Patel was injured in the same incident. Rescue workers used a Prabhu helicopter to fly the injured passenger to Medicity Hospital in Kathmandu, while the body of the deceased tourist was taken to a hospital in Lukla. The pilot of the Fishtail Air helicopter also sustained minor injuries in the mishap.

Investigation

Local authorities and police officials including DSP Nabinraj Budhathoki and Inspector Mausam Tamang confirmed the accident. Nepali officials are currently investigating the exact cause of the collision, noting that icy conditions on the helipad might have contributed to the situation alongside the challenge of two different aircraft arriving at the same location from opposite directions.

Context

Pheriche is a major hub for helicopter services in the Everest region of Nepal, situated at a high altitude where aircraft are frequently used to rescue climbers and trekkers suffering from altitude sickness or injuries. Mountainous terrain, changing weather conditions, and high-altitude runways often make aviation in the region risky. Authorities are continuing to gather detailed information about the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
