UPDATE - follow‑up to India has never allowed import of genetically modified products, will never open dairy sector: Piyush Goyal:
Trade Stance
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India will not open its dairy sector in any free‑trade agreement and will never allow genetically modified (GM) products to enter the country. He called both dairy and GM foods "very sensitive" issues and stressed protection of farmers, fishermen and MSMEs. Goyal explained that many foreign dairy producers use calf meat or rennet, an enzyme from young calves, and that India requires strict certification to avoid hurting religious sensitivities.
Export Targets
Speaking to Kirori Mal College students, Goyal announced a goal of $1 trillion in goods and services exports for 2026‑27. He noted that exports reached about $480 billion between April and September 2026, a 14% year‑on‑year rise, and that $520 billion more are needed in the final six months to hit the target.
Industry Push
The minister said the government is promoting manufacturing, entrepreneurship and start‑ups to create more jobs. He mentioned collaborations with aircraft makers Embraer, Airbus and Boeing to increase plane availability and boost tourism. When asked about possible Chinese restrictions on tunnel‑boring machines, Goyal said India would develop its own capability rather than rely on external supply.
Context
These remarks come as India continues to protect agriculture and dairy while seeking preferential market access for textiles, pharma, gems and jewellery.
