Navy Chief Admiral Swaminathan Stresses Self-Reliance to Avoid External Dependencies
Reported by Faizan Khan (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan stated on Tuesday that building a self-reliant defence sector is a strategic necessity for the country. Speaking at the Delhi Defence Dialogue in New Delhi on November 3, 2026, he emphasized that national security requires a naval force capable of fighting and sustaining itself without relying on external agencies or foreign dependencies.
Global Tensions And Technology
The Navy chief pointed out that growing political tensions around the world have revived historical disputes and made the use of force an acceptable tool of national policy. He noted that conflicts like the one in Ukraine show how easily global supply chains and military capabilities can get disrupted. He also warned that the spread of technology has made advanced tools available to both state and non-state actors alike. To meet these challenges, he called for filling important gaps, investing more money into research and development, and speeding up the process of turning new ideas into actual operational gear.
Partnerships And Regional Focus
While pushing for self-reliance, Admiral Swaminathan clarified that isolation is not the goal, and India must work with friendly foreign nations from a position of strength rather than weakness. During an interactive session, he noted that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep remain crucial areas for the Navy, and the force keeps a close watch on critical sea lanes like the Strait of Malacca. On India-Africa defence ties, he highlighted the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR initiative and the Africa India Key Maritime Engagement exercise, noting that Kenya has volunteered to be a partner for the 2027 edition following the event held in Tanzania in April of last year.
Context
Self-reliance in defence, commonly referred to as Aatmanirbharta, has become a core policy goal for India to reduce its historical status as one of the world's largest arms importers. Events like the Delhi Defence Dialogue bring together military leaders, government officials, and industry experts to discuss ways to boost domestic manufacturing and modern technology in the armed forces.
