State-owned NMDC saw its iron ore production increase by 18 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 5.04 million tonnes in October. At the same time, sales fell by more than 11 percent to 3.44 million tonnes during the month. For the seven-month period ending in October, total production reached 32.32 million tonnes, up from 26.47 million tonnes previously. Total sales for the same seven months stood at 25.67 million tonnes, compared to 26.12 million tonnes in the previous year. The drop in sales happened because heavy monsoon rains in September and and October washed away parts of the Kottavalasa–Kirandul railway line. This railway disruption stopped movement from the Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh for almost a month.
