Investigation Report

A judicial commission has submitted its report to the State government regarding the deadly fireworks tragedy at Mundathikode in Thrissur. Retired Justice N. Ramachandran Nair handed over the findings to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala at his chamber.

The Tragedy And Causes

A massive explosion occurred on April 21 at a fireworks unit while materials were being prepared for the Thiruvambady faction ahead of Thrissur Pooram. The blast killed 16 people and left 40 injured, while also damaging around 50 houses in the area. The inquiry revealed that the site held about 7,000 kilograms of explosives even though permission was granted to store only 15 kilograms. Investigators identified the extensive use of banned potassium chlorate as the main cause of the blast. Friction between chemicals amid high temperatures triggered the initial fire that led to the massive explosion.

Context

Festivals in Kerala often feature large-scale traditional fireworks displays that require strict safety protocols and legal storage limits. When illegal chemical stockpiles and banned substances like potassium chlorate are used, the risk of high-temperature friction causing catastrophic accidents increases significantly.
