Tennessee prisoner on the run for over a week captured in Missouri
Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · CBS News - Crime ·
Law enforcement agencies have captured a convicted murderer who spent more than a week on the run after escaping from a Tennessee prison. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that 28-year-old Jacob Morley is back in custody following an arrest near Kansas City, Missouri.
The Escape
Morley was serving a life sentence at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville when he broke out. Correctional officers discovered he was missing at around 11:30 p.m. on October 25. Security camera footage later showed Morley slipping through a prison fence while wearing his prison uniform.
Stolen Truck
Investigators released footage two days after the breakout showing Morley stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 truck in Lake County. The vehicle featured Tennessee plates and a logo for Lindamood Planting Company on the side door. Authorities located the stolen truck later that same day in Marion, Illinois, but Morley's location remained unknown at the time.
Background and Conviction
Morley had been serving a life sentence for murdering his former coworker, Cody Birchfield, in 2022. Investigators found Birchfield's body in a box under Morley's home in Carter County after he went missing for several weeks. Morley was also convicted of aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest during that earlier 2022 manhunt.
Context
Prison breaks often trigger multi-state law enforcement manhunts involving local police, state bureaus, and federal agencies like the U.S. Marshals. Captured inmates typically face additional felony charges for escape and vehicle theft, which add to their existing prison sentences.
