Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha has returned to Mumbai on a stretcher for further medical treatment after suffering a spinal fracture in an accident in Bali. Her team earlier confirmed the injury and stated she was under medical observation abroad before arrangements were made to airlift her to India.
Medical Care
Spine fractures vary in severity, with some managed through medication, bracing and monitoring, while others need surgery due to instability or pressure on the spinal cord. Dr Jayesh Bhanushali, a spine surgery consultant at KIMS Hospitals in Thane, explains that doctors assess the fracture location, pattern, stability, vertebra displacement, and nerve pressure to decide on treatment. Surgery is generally considered for unstable fractures, vertebra collapse, neurological symptoms like weakness or numbness, or when the spine cannot be stabilized conservatively. Stable fractures without nerve involvement often receive pain medicine, bracing and medical follow-up.
Air Travel
An air ambulance is used to transport patients with serious injuries while maintaining spinal precautions, continuous monitoring, oxygen, and immobilisation with trained medical staff. Dr Bhanushali notes that transfer timing depends on patient stability, fracture type, spinal stability, nerve status, pain control, and overall health. Commercial flights are generally avoided right after a major spinal injury unless doctors confirm safety, and post-surgery travel timing is decided by the treating surgeon based on recovery and blood clot risks. A stable fracture may improve in six to 12 weeks, while complex fractures needing surgery take several months. Early supervised physiotherapy may begin once the spine is stabilized and the surgeon allows it.
Context
Spine injuries require careful medical evaluation and specialized transport to prevent further damage to the spinal cord. Medical experts prioritize patient stabilization before any long-distance travel, utilizing air ambulances equipped with life support when standard commercial flights pose risks.
