Actor Shabana Azmi and several other film industry figures took part in an agitation at a public ground in Mumbai to protest against the Election Commission. The event, held by the Cockroach Janta Party, focused on issues surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. Organisers are demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
Protest And Police Response
Besides Shabana Azmi, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, musician Vishal Dadlani, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, and singer Rekha Bhardwaj attended the gathering. Actor Prakash Raj also sent a video message in support of the event. During the protest, Naseeruddin Shah met the founder of the group, Abhijeet Dipke, and encouraged him to keep up his work. The demonstration took place even though local police had refused permission for it, leading to heavy security arrangements and barricades around the venue with thousands of people attending.
Reactions And Next Steps
Shabana Azmi told the crowd that voting is a fundamental right and citizens must protest peacefully if their names get cut from voter lists. Meanwhile, her husband Javed Akhtar defended the meeting on social media against complaints about noise, asking if political parties face similar questions for their rallies. The group behind the agitation stated it will stay separate and not join a different protest planned by the opposition.
Context
Public grounds in major cities often see large political and social demonstrations, which routinely draw heavy security measures from local police forces. Controversies regarding voter list revisions and electoral bodies frequently become flashpoints for civic activism and public debate in the country.
