Representative image · PexelsHDFC Bank shares have gained buying interest and a buy rating from Jefferies India following the RBI approval of Anup Bagchi as the new managing director and chief executive officer of the private lender. The global brokerage predicts a 22 percent upside with a price target of 880 rupees in the Indian market, alongside a 25 percent upside for the bank's ADR on the New York Stock Exchange to reach 28 dollars from its recent close of 22 dollars and 34 cents.
Market Performance
The bank's shares have faced a negative year-to-date return, correcting by over 27 percent, and slipped over 6 percent in the last six months. However, the stock rose over 2 percent in the past month, recovering from earlier losses as leadership uncertainty cleared. Jefferies notes that the new appointment brings clear succession plans and strategic direction. The bank's retail deposit growth lagged peers at 12 percent compared to 15 percent for ICICI and 14 percent for SBI, though it successfully mobilised 11 to 12 billion dollars in FCNR-B deposits within two months.
Growth Opportunities
Key opportunities for the lender include improving retail deposit growth, enhancing cross-sell fees, and calibrating the risk profile of its loan mix toward segments like SME and business banking loans, gold loans, and unsecured personal loans. Fee growth in past quarters slowed due to lower credit card fees and third-party product income, while corporate and secured lending growth alongside downward repricing of loan rates have impacted net interest margins. The brokerage highlights that about 70 percent of loans are linked to floating rates, positioning the bank to benefit from potential rate hikes.
Context
Banking sector analysts closely track leadership stability and deposit mobilization metrics because these factors directly influence a lender's cost of funds and credit expansion capacity. Large retail lenders navigate complex economic cycles by balancing high-yielding loan segments with stable, low-cost deposit bases to protect their overall profit margins and return on assets.
