Representative image · PexelsKnee pain can happen more often as people grow older, but staying active and building muscle strength around the joint helps support everyday movement. Carrie Lynn Sisson, a fitness content creator and longevity advocate, shared four exercises in an Instagram post to keep knees strong and mobile.
Exercise Routine
Carrie says people do not need to avoid letting their knees travel over their toes during squats as long as the movement is comfortable and controlled. Beginners or those working on balance can hold onto a stable counter to make the movement easier. Another exercise is tibialis raises, which target the muscle at the front of the shin that absorbs impact with every step. This is done by standing against a wall with heels on the floor and lifting the toes upward. Step-downs focus on lower-body strength and controlled movement by standing on a step and slowly lowering one heel to the floor before coming back up. Finally, wall sits help strengthen the quadriceps muscles, which act as bodyguards for the knees. Carrie recommends starting wall sits for 20 to 30 seconds and increasing the time as strength improves.
Context
Maintaining joint health and muscle strength through targeted exercises is a common recommendation for aging adults to preserve independence and prevent injury. People with existing pain or injuries should always adapt their routines to their personal ability and seek advice from a medical professional before starting a new fitness program.
