India need to lock in their main playing combination quickly as the World Cup is only a year away, captain Shubman Gill said after a five-wicket defeat to the West Indies in New Chandigarh on Saturday. West Indies chased down a target of 352 runs to win the final ODI, exposing major gaps in India's bowling attack.

Bowling Struggles

India tried out six different fast-bowling options over six days, but the attack lacked regular wicket-taking ability. The team missed key pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya due to injuries and overlapping matches. Without them, the team management gave ODI debuts to domestic performers Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi. Both debutants struggled on the batting-friendly pitches, with Nabi conceding 84 runs in Guwahati and Kamboj giving away 82 runs in nine overs against West Indies captain Shai Hope, who scored an unbeaten 162.

Future Plans

Despite the tough start, Gill strongly defended both young fast bowlers and confirmed they remain key parts of the team's plans. Gill pointed out that Kamboj can bat at number eight, a vital spot for the team as they look for seamers who can also score runs. The captain noted it is harsh to expect instant results in international cricket and hopes the players learn from these early mistakes.

Context

Finding a reliable lower-order batsman who can bowl fast is a common goal for cricket teams building towards major global tournaments. Captains often test new domestic talent when senior players are injured, though young bowlers frequently face a steep learning curve at the international level.
