Indian athletes claimed several historic medals and milestone achievements at Aichi-Nagoya, led by victories in hockey, wrestling, archery, shooting, and athletics.
Hockey and Wrestling Feats
The Indian women's hockey team secured a direct berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games by defeating Paris Olympic silver medallists China in the final, ending a 44-year wait since the event's debut at the 1982 Asian Games. The team was led by Salima Tete and guided by Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne. In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat won gold in the men's 57 kg category by beating reigning world champion Han Chong Song of North Korea, adding to his Paris 2024 bronze. Nitesh Siwach also claimed a silver in the men's 97 kg Greco-Roman category, marking India's first medal in that event in 64 years.
Archery, Shooting, and Athletics
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod became the first Indian woman recurve archer to reach an individual final, defeating Korean shooter Oh Je-yin to win gold and an Olympic quota. This victory helped the women's team break a 28-year Korean stranglehold in the event. In shooting, the shotgun section won more gold medals than rifle and pistol for the first time in history, spearheaded by 26-year-old Neeru Dhanda. Dhanda won the trap individual gold, a feat last achieved for India by Randhir Singh in 1978. Meanwhile, national record holder Sawan Barwal won silver in the marathon with a time of 2:11:37, ending a 44-year medal drought and securing India's first-ever Asian Games marathon medal won outside the country.
Context
Major multi-sport events like the Asian Games serve as crucial testing grounds for athletes aiming toward the Olympic Games. Winning direct quotas and competing against world-class fields help nations gauge their preparation years in advance. These milestone performances reflect the growing depth of Indian sports across disciplines beyond traditional strongholds.
