Actor Jennifer Lawrence reached her 8.7 million Instagram followers with a call to vote on Election Day by posing with the three-finger salute from her role as Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games." She added a link to Vote.org for voters to find their nearest polling place. While she did not name any candidates, her caption borrowed a famous line from the 2014 movie "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1." In that film, her character delivers the line after a hospital in her home district is bombed, telling the president that if the districts burn, he burns with them too. Fans connected the rebellious quote to Donald Trump, whom Lawrence openly opposed during his first term as U.S. president.

Past Comments

Lawrence previously questioned whether celebrity political opinions help voters. Last year, she told The New York Times that stars do not change election outcomes and that sharing political views only adds fuel to a divided country. She noted a wish to protect her art and craft so audiences could still enjoy her films without being turned away by her personal views. Despite those past remarks, she used her social media presence to push for voter turnout.

Upcoming Film

Her return to the franchise comes ahead of the upcoming prequel movie titled "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," which opens in theaters on November 20 from Lionsgate. Lawrence spoke about returning to the role after 11 years on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast last month. She described the experience as emotional and noted she reunited with the same crew and co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson.

Context

Celebrities often use their massive social media followings to encourage voter participation during major elections. Film studios also frequently coordinate marketing campaigns and promotional interviews around the same time actors make major public appearances.
