Prince William warns of rising wildfire threat after visiting Treherbert
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · BBC News - Science & Environment ·
The Prince of Wales has warned of a terrifying prospect of more wildfires in the future due to climate change, calling for better preparation across the country. During a visit to Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Prince William praised the massive effort to save homes, land and lives from a huge mountain fire that threatened the village in August. He stated that the nation must start taking wildfires as seriously as continental Europe, highlighting a shortage of firefighting aircraft.
The August Crisis
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident in August after responding to 14 wildfires at the same time, including the blaze near Treherbert. Support came from 22 other fire services across the country, while soldiers were deployed to dig fire breaks and supply 2.1 million litres of water. This deployment included 200 members of the Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment. Months of record-breaking heat and dry conditions sparked the fires through spring and summer.
Ground Realities
Aled Bound, a crew manager and on-call firefighter, told the prince it was the hardest wildfire season he had ever dealt with, describing it as mentally and physically draining. Figures from the National Fire Chiefs Council show a new high of 1,350 recorded wildfires across England and Wales, which is up by more than 300 on 2025 and more than 1,000 on 2024. Prince William noted that 2026 was the first summer he felt generally worried about the scale of wildfires in the country.
Context
Wildfires driven by severe dry spells and high temperatures place an immense strain on local emergency services, often requiring multi-agency responses from the military and regional fire brigades. Governments and officials are increasingly examining equipment shortages, such as dedicated aerial firefighting assets, to better manage blazes in rugged terrain.
