Reliance Industries takes top spot in margin trading after record surge
Reported by Harshdeep Singh (Fact-Checker) · Livemint - Markets ·
Reliance Industries shares will stay in focus after the Mukesh Ambani-led company claimed the highest position in the margin trading facility book following a major rally earlier in the week.
Market Position
Data released by the National Stock Exchange shows the firm's margin trading exposure jumped sixty percent to 4,711 crore rupees by November 2, moving up from 2,937 crore rupees at the end of October 30. This sharp growth allowed Reliance to surpass HDFC Bank, which held the top spot in the book for several months. The entire margin trading book reached 1.45 lakh crore rupees, with the top ten stocks accounting for 19,442 crore rupees of exposure. Reliance alone made up twenty-four percent of that total among the top ten stocks. The company also remained the most traded stock in the Nifty 500 index on both Monday and Tuesday, with trading turnover exceeding 11,000 crore rupees on the first day and staying above 5,000 crore rupees on the second day. Tuesday saw delivery-based buying worth nearly 3,000 crore rupees, following over 6,000 crore rupees in delivery volumes on Monday.
Financial Results
The share price jumped nearly eleven percent in a single session alongside a strong volume breakout. Apurva Sheth from SAMCO Securities noted that the stock broke above a downward trendline, pointing to fresh buying interest driven by technical factors, strong volumes, better earnings, and value unlocking through Jio. The company posted a consolidated profit after tax of 29,550 crore rupees for the second quarter of fiscal year 27, marking a thirty-four percent year-on-year growth. Profit attributable to owners surged forty percent to 25,548 crore rupees. Consolidated revenue climbed nearly twenty-eight percent to 3,62,268 crore rupees, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization rose twenty-four percent to a record 62,409 crore rupees.
Expert Views
Gaurav Garg from Lemonn advised investors to hold current positions and wait for a clear breakout above 1,250 to 1,252 rupees before adding fresh purchases, pointing out that support lies between 1,155 and 1,160 rupees. Meanwhile, Motilal Oswal kept a buy rating on the stock with a revised target price of 1,520 rupees, highlighting that the energy segment drives near-term upgrades while retail growth remains a key long-term driver.
Context
Margin trading facilities allow investors to borrow funds from brokers to buy shares by paying a smaller portion of the total value upfront. A sharp jump in such exposure typically points to high speculative interest or strong bullish momentum among retail and institutional participants. Large Indian conglomerates often see heightened trading activity when stellar quarterly earnings coincide with broader technical breakouts in the broader market.
