Government Proposes Ten New Entry Points for Importing Medical Goods
Reported by Pooja Nair (Section Editor) · The Hindu - National ·
UPDATE - follow-up to Centre proposes 10 new import gateways for drugs, medical devices: The Union Health Ministry wants to add ten new inland container depots, one special economic zone, and one airport to the approved list of entry points for bringing medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics into the country.
New Locations
The planned changes suggest adding locations in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, and Karnataka. Specifically, the list covers inland container depots at Sonipat, Piyala, Harsaru, Dadri, Gandhidham and Mundra, Sanath Nagar, Thimmapur, and Whitefield. It also includes a special economic zone in Bommasandra and the new airport in Noida. These sites will join existing gateways like the depots in Indore.
Expected Benefits
Officials state that this expansion will let companies clear their imported shipments much closer to their factories, storage units, and distribution hubs. This change aims to cut down long truck journeys within the country, lower shipping expenses, and speed up the delivery of essential health items.
Next Steps
The government has opened the draft proposal for public feedback. Stakeholders can send their comments or objections to the Under Secretary for Drugs Regulation at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, or email them directly to the ministry's designated address.
Context
Importing medical supplies requires strict checks at designated border points to ensure safety standards are met. Bringing these entry points closer to industrial clusters helps reduce the time goods spend in transit across the country.
