The Indian rupee gained 17 paise to close at 94.58 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, marking its second straight session of gains. Lower crude oil prices, a weak dollar index, and fresh funds coming from overseas investors supported the local currency. Forex traders noted that positive domestic stock markets also helped the rupee. In the interbank market, the rupee opened at 94.61 and touched a high of 94.50 and a low of 94.87 during the day. On Tuesday, the currency had risen 9 paise to close at 94.75. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, stated that the U.S. midterm election outcome improved global sentiment and raised hopes for a steady approach to trade and tariff rules, which could support foreign institutional investments in emerging markets. Meanwhile, the dollar index traded down 0.53 percent at 101.18, while U.S. Treasury yields dropped amid expectations of a good showing for the Democratic Party in the midterms. Brent crude futures fell 0.73 percent to 102.84 dollars per barrel. On the domestic equity side, the Sensex rose 383.55 points to end at 77,301.40, and the Nifty went up 149.75 points to close at 23,960.60. Foreign Institutional Investors bought equities worth 6,836.81 crore rupees on Tuesday, staying net buyers for the third straight day.

Context

Currency values fluctuate daily based on global economic conditions, international crude oil prices, and foreign investor activity in local stock markets. When the U.S. dollar weakens and crude oil becomes cheaper, it reduces the cost of imports for India, which helps stabilize the rupee. Major stock indexes like Sensex and Nifty reflect the overall health and investor confidence within the country's financial markets.
