Precious metals and Indian stock markets recorded strong gains following the results of the US midterm elections. Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a political setback to President Donald Trump and weakening the US dollar alongside Treasury yields.

Market Movements

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold rose 2.5 percent to an intraday high of ₹1,42,957 per 10 grams. Silver jumped over 4 percent to reach ₹1,87,422 per kilogram. Globally, bullion climbed up to 2.5 percent near $4,030 an ounce, while silver reached just under $52 an ounce. Indian equities extended their winning streak to a fifth straight session on Wednesday. The Nifty 50 closed up 149.75 points at 23,960.60, and the Sensex gained 383.55 points to settle at 77,301.40.

Analyst Views

Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments noted that the election outcome improved global sentiment and could support foreign institutional investor flows into emerging markets. Dheeraj Gaur of Choice Wealth projected the Nifty could reach 26,500 to 27,000 over the next 12 months, though he cautioned that a sustained oil shock could test lower levels. Meanwhile, ICICI Bank stated that the Democrat sweep was unlikely to alter the course of the West Asia war or major trade policies, though it could bring more congressional scrutiny to tariff decisions. Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities highlighted that the Nifty crossed its 200-day exponential moving average near 23,900, with immediate upside watched around the 24,300 to 24,400 range. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking advised selective stock picking and noted immediate support at 23,200 to 23,500.

Context

Lower US Treasury yields and a weaker dollar typically make gold more attractive to global buyers since the metal does not pay interest. Indian market performance often tracks global investor sentiment, crude oil price movements, and domestic corporate earnings reports.
