Representative image · PexelsChest pain is not the only sign of a heart attack, says cardiologist Dr Anjan Siotia, director of Cardiology at BM Birla Heart Hospital. He warns that sudden shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, excessive sweating, nausea, dizziness or a vague ache in the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw can also signal heart trouble. Breathlessness that appears during an activity previously easy – such as climbing a few stairs or walking a short distance – should prompt a medical check, especially if it comes with chest discomfort, dizziness or weakness. Dr Anjan notes that many people mistake these clues for indigestion, simple exhaustion or lack of fitness, but a rapid change in how the body feels warrants attention. ## Risk Factors He lists diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, excess weight and sedentary lifestyle as proven contributors to heart disease. Stress, poor sleep and long hours on smartphones are added concerns that lower recovery time and increase risk, even among younger adults. Recent data show heart attacks are occurring more often in people under forty, making early vigilance essential. ## Prevention Stopping smoking, keeping blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under control, and taking prescribed medicines are basic steps. Dr Anjan adds that regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep and stress management are equally vital, and mental health care supports heart health as well. ## Context Heart‑related emergencies can present with subtle or non‑chest symptoms, a pattern that often leads to delayed treatment. Recognising these alternative warning signs improves chances of timely care and better outcomes.
