The Congress party has appointed three-term MLA Aradhana Mishra, known as Mona, as its new Uttar Pradesh state president, replacing Ajay Rai ahead of next year's assembly elections. The party also named Saharanpur MP Imran Masood as the state unit working president, alongside senior vice presidents Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad. Mishra assumes the leadership role while the Congress is currently holding talks with its ally, the Samajwadi Party, to finalise a seat-sharing formula for the upcoming polls. Born in Prayagraj in 1974, Mishra joined the Congress in 1998 after studying at Allahabad University and working in the corporate sector and with non-profits. She began her political career by winning the block pramukh election for Sangramgarh in Pratapgarh in 2002, serving three consecutive terms before entering state politics. Her political career turned in 2014 when she won the assembly bypoll from Rampur Khas after her father, Pramod Tiwari, moved to the Rajya Sabha. She held the seat in 2017 and won again in 2022 by defeating BJP candidate Nagesh Pratap Singh by 14,741 votes.

The Tiwari Connection

Mishra's elevation highlights the lasting political influence of her father, Pramod Tiwari, who is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House. Tiwari represented Rampur Khas nine consecutive times from 1980 to 2012 and secured his 2014 Rajya Sabha seat with support from the Samajwadi Party, aided by a close bond with its founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. Mishra herself has built independent political capital, notably when the Samajwadi Party did not field a candidate against her in the 2022 assembly elections. She also worked closely with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the 'Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon' campaign.

Context

State party leadership changes in key states like Uttar Pradesh often reflect broader efforts by national parties to balance caste equations and electoral alliances ahead of major assembly contests. By combining a Brahmin state chief with a Muslim working president and OBC and Dalit senior vice presidents, the party aims to rebuild its traditional social coalition in the state.
