The BJP has released its list of eight candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, leaving out Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and B L Verma whose terms in the Upper House end on November 25. The approved candidates include state minister Dharam Pal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, and Shruti Gangwar. Elections for 12 Rajya Sabha seats across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal will take place on October 16. This includes 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh, one from Uttarakhand, and a bypoll for one seat in West Bengal. Other retiring members from Uttar Pradesh include BJP leaders Arun Singh, Geeta Shakya, Neeraj Shekhar, Brijlal, Seema Dwivedi, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, and BSP member Ramji Gautam. Additionally, the seat held by former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma has been vacant since September 11 after his resignation due to his appointment as lieutenant governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The BJP's list features three OBC faces, two Brahmins, two Dalits, and one Thakur nominee. This selection increases the representation of OBC and Dalit communities compared to the retiring members, who included two OBCs, two Thakurs, two Brahmins, one Dalit, and one Sikh. Among the OBC nominees is Dharam Pal Singh, an animal husbandry minister in the Yogi Adityanath government. The other OBC candidates are Prakash Pal and Shruti Gangwar. The two Brahmin nominees are Radha Kant Ojha and Gopi Krishna Pandey. The Dalit candidates are Priyanka Singh Rawat and Vidya Sagar Sonkar, while Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan is the Thakur nominee.
