Up to five hundred high schools across France will stay closed either completely or partially on Monday due to widespread student demonstrations that have turned violent in parts of the country. Education Minister Edouard Geffray stated that lessons are suspended in four to five hundred institutions because safety conditions are not met, noting that twenty-four schools have suffered fire or vandalism since the unrest began.

Student Grievances And Clashes

Teenagers attending French high schools complain that missing teachers, long school days, and crumbling facilities are ruining their education. The demonstrations started at a Paris school on September seventeen and expanded nationwide last week, drawing strong clashes where security forces used tear gas and batons against youths. More than five thousand people, with eighty-five percent being minors, have faced arrest since the movement started. Mr. Geffray alleged that far-left activists hijacked the student protest and caused extreme violence, resulting in seventy-eight injured education staff members and twenty-four vandalized schools. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced a timetable urging local authorities to fill missing teaching posts and scheduled a Tuesday meeting with regional leaders to fix rundown school buildings.

Context

France has a long history of student-led political activism, where high school and university youth frequently organize mass walkouts and street demonstrations to pressure the central government on public services and education funding. When such movements grow large, they often draw separate political factions and lead to clashes with law enforcement over crowd control tactics.
