Representative image · PexelsUPDATE - follow-up to Woman dies of plague in Siberia: regional official: Russian health authorities have placed a hospital under quarantine and are watching people who had contact with a research institute employee in Siberia who died of pneumonia of an unknown cause. The woman worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Irkutsk, southeastern Siberia, and died last week in a hospital in Shelekhov. Officials found no proof her illness came from any pathogens she handled at work. Unconfirmed media reports suggested she died from pneumonic plague, leading to public concern. Shelekhov Mayor Maxim Modin stated that the hospital stopped taking in or discharging patients, and its lab paused routine tests, though the outpatient clinic stayed open. Anna Popova, head of Russia's public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, traveled to Irkutsk to meet Governor Igor Kobzev. Governor Kobzev noted that all contacts are under medical watch and called it a suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection. Rospotrebnadzor reported that extensive tests found no microorganisms linked to her job, and two contacts tested positive for a common cold virus while two others had COVID-19, with all other tests coming back negative. Independent local outlet Lyudi Baikala quoted anonymous sources claiming she died of pneumonic plague and that multiple hospitals faced quarantine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged the public to trust official statements over rumors. Meanwhile, Irkutsk Aluminum Plant director Artyom Fominykh directed staff to wear masks as a precaution. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the U.S. is watching the situation closely.
Context
Plague is an infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria typically found in small mammals and fleas, and while pneumonic plague can spread between people, modern living conditions and antibiotics limit its overall spread. Public health agencies routinely quarantine facilities and monitor exposed individuals when unusual respiratory illnesses appear near research laboratories.
