New Leadership

The Congress party has appointed Pargat Singh as its new state unit president in Punjab. Singh is a 62-year-old three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment and a former captain of the Indian hockey team. His appointment comes amid open infighting and factionalism within the state unit, particularly involving his predecessor Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Party Unity

Addressing the internal rifts in an interview, Singh stated that differences of opinion naturally happen in a democracy but insisted that the party is united. He asserted that party workers have no standing outside Punjab and the Congress, meaning there is no real room for factionalism. He contrasted this openness with rival parties, pointing out that the Aam Aadmi Party recently suspended its Maur MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana after he publicly raised the issue of a teacher shortage. Singh also compared his leadership style to his past role as a hockey full-back, stating that his goal is to take every member along and assign roles based on individual strengths.

2027 Poll Strategy

Looking ahead to the Assembly elections due in February 2027, Singh said the party will contest under a collective leadership. He noted that the decision on a chief minister rests with the elected legislators, and candidate selection will depend on merit, surveys, winnability, and character to secure a majority across the 117 seats. The party plans to run on a platform of reviving 'brand Punjab', tackling issues such as law and order, drugs, the state economy, mounting debt, farming, and women's safety. Singh also stated that the Congress intends to demand accountability from both the BJP and the AAP for their respective time in power, while viewing the Waris Punjab De group as just another party entering a multi-cornered contest.

Context

Punjab politics regularly features multi-cornered electoral contests involving regional parties and national players like the BJP and the AAP. State party units often face internal leadership challenges ahead of major assembly elections as different factions vie for influence and chief ministerial projections.
