Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will rename its artificial intelligence division to SpaceXSI to match a term heavily promoted by the White House. The tech entrepreneur confirmed the upcoming rebrand on Sunday, October 4, through a post on the platform X in response to a user's inquiry, though he shared no further information about the update for the Grok maker.
White House Push
President Donald Trump signed an executive order replacing the phrase artificial intelligence with super intelligence across federal government documents and public communications. The directive mandates federal agencies to adopt the label SI and tasks the Office of Science and Technology Policy leader with reviewing the official definition. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also recently adopted the terminology, suggesting data centres be called superintelligence factories.
Government And State Actions
The White House administration formed a new panel called the Super Intelligence Force to study the risks and benefits of the technology within 120 days, led by national intelligence director Jay Clayton. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom pushed back against the federal shift by signing a state executive order requiring California agencies to keep using the traditional artificial intelligence label.
Context
While the White House has largely resisted heavy federal oversight and dismissed security warnings as exaggerated, some tech executives and safety advocates remain divided on the potential risks of advanced systems. Debates continue across the tech industry regarding whether linguistic changes address underlying safety concerns or simply alter public perception.
