Dr Anindya Mukherjee, a medical oncologist, warns that while most swollen nodes are harmless and heal over time, they can sometimes signal lymphoma.
Lymphoma Signs
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system that occurs when white blood cells known as lymphocytes grow in an abnormal and uncontrolled way. The condition falls into two broad categories called Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and each category includes several subtypes. The main warning sign is a persistent and painless swelling in the neck, armpit, or groin lymph nodes. Unlike routine nodes that shrink after an infection goes away, lumps that keep growing or lack a clear cause need a medical check.
Associated Symptoms
Other warning signs include unexplained fever, heavy night sweats, and losing weight without trying. Patients may also face ongoing tiredness, lower appetite, and unexplained itching. When swollen nodes form in the chest, they can trigger a lasting cough, breathing trouble, or chest discomfort. Swollen nodes or an enlarged spleen in the abdomen can lead to stomach discomfort, bloating, or feeling full too quickly after a small meal.
Daily Habits
Young adults often write off these signs as normal parts of daily life. Tiredness gets blamed on long work hours or poor sleep, while fevers and weight shifts are linked to routine infections or lifestyle changes. Dr Mukherjee points out that symptoms which keep returning, linger for a long time, or get worse need proper medical evaluation without delay.
Context
Lymphatic cancer affects the body's germ-fighting network, meaning that early detection through medical screening is crucial for proper care. Many common illnesses share similar early warning signs, which makes professional diagnosis important when symptoms do not resolve naturally.
