Minnesota Democrats Win Full Control of State Government in Election
Reported by Shreya Kapoor (Senior Writer) · CBS News - Politics ·
Minnesota Democrats have won full control of the state government after securing majorities in both chambers of the Legislature and winning the governor's race.
House and Senate Results
In the House, the DFL won at least 72 out of 134 seats by Wednesday morning, while a majority requires 68 seats. Republicans secured 50 seats, and 12 races remained uncalled under unofficial results. Before Election Day, Democrats held 67 seats in the chamber. In the Senate, the DFL claimed at least 34 of 67 seats to hold their required majority, while Republicans won 24 and nine races stayed open.
Governor's Race
U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar won the race for governor against Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth. Klobuchar is set to become the first woman to serve as Minnesota's governor. She entered the race after Gov. Tim Walz chose not to seek a third term.
Context
A government trifecta happens when one single party holds the governor's office along with majorities in both legislative chambers. This outcome ends two years of divided government in Minnesota that began after the 2024 election. Unofficial results mean vote counting is still ongoing before final certification.
