UPDATE - follow-up to Sen. Amy Klobuchar wins Minnesota governor's race, CBS News projects: Democratic U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar won the Minnesota governor's race, defeating Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth. Klobuchar will become the state's first female governor, succeeding two-term Democrat Tim Walz, who did not seek a third term.

The Campaign

The election centered on a major fraud scandal involving state-run social services programs. Federal prosecutors estimate stolen funds could top $9 billion from programs meant for food, health care, shelter, and child care. Republicans focused heavily on the scandal during the race. Klobuchar pledged to audit state government, invest in fraud-detection technology, and use her past experience as Hennepin County's head prosecutor.

Background and Fundraising

Demuth won the August Republican primary against opponents including MyPillow founder Mike Lindell. Klobuchar raised over $15.5 million by mid-October, compared to $3.6 million for Demuth. Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since 2006.

Context

Statewide gubernatorial elections in the United States often focus heavily on local economic management and state agency oversight. Candidates frequently highlight their executive or prosecutorial backgrounds to address public concerns about government accountability and spending.
