Amy Klobuchar elected Minnesota governor in state election
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · CBS News - Politics ·
Democratic U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar won the Minnesota governor's race against Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth. Klobuchar will be the first woman to serve as governor of Minnesota. She takes over from current Governor Tim Walz, who did not run for a third term.
The Campaign
The election took place under the shadow of a large fraud scandal in state-run social services programs. Federal prosecutors estimate that the stolen funds could reach over nine billion dollars. Most of the people charged in the case are of Somali descent, which became a major point of debate during the race. Klobuchar focused her platform on lowering costs for health care, child care, and housing. She also promised to audit state government, upgrade technology to stop fraud, and use her past experience as a prosecutor. Her campaign raised more than fifteen million dollars by mid-October.
The Opponent
Lisa Demuth won the Republican primary in August after competing against Mike Lindell and Kendall Qualls. She made the state fraud scandal a central part of her campaign and pledged to fight violent crime and improve education. Demuth raised three million six hundred thousand dollars for her campaign.
Context
State governors in the United States manage executive operations, state budgets, and major public programs within their respective states. This election shifts leadership in Minnesota after years of Democratic control under outgoing Governor Tim Walz.
