Comedian Jo Koy’s joke about his late stepfather dying at a Los Angeles Dodgers game went viral after his Netflix special “Jo Koy: Blue in the Face” aired. The story behind the punchline began when Koy took Sgt. Fred Harrison, a decorated Army veteran battling cancer and a lifelong Dodgers fan, to a game that stretched into extra innings. During the late innings Koy joked that his stepdad, who had survived two tours of Vietnam, was about to “die in a fucking Dodgers game.” The line sparked millions of views and was highlighted in a Variety interview for the “Anatomy of a Joke: Spotlight” series, presented by Icon Live. To bring Harrison to life on stage, Koy mimicked the sound of the oxygen tank and even lifted the microphone cord to his nose, copying the mask his stepfather wore. “I’m not going to just talk about Fred. I’m going to bring Fred to life,” Koy told Variety. He said he prefers to let material grow on stage rather than write it down, noting that a written joke feels too structured. At a performance in Harrison’s West Virginian hometown, Koy spent about 30 minutes reliving memories of his stepfather, saying the routine was “literally verbatim what happened that day.” He added that he has long admired comedians who act out characters, a habit he wove into his Netflix special that debuted in September.

Context

The Dodgers are a popular MLB team in Los Angeles, and jokes that mix personal loss with sports moments often resonate online. Koy’s tribute shows how comedians can turn a private memory into a widely shared piece of humor.
