Godzilla Minus Zero Set to Top Box Office With $30 Million Opening Weekend
Reported by Neha Sharma (Staff Writer) · Variety ·
Godzilla Minus Zero is on track to lead the box office with a $30 million opening weekend from 3,254 North American theaters. The action adventure will outpace other new releases, including Warner Bros. Animation's The Cat in the Hat and Searchlight's Wild Horse Nine. The Cat in the Hat aims for second place with $20 million to $25 million from 4,000 domestic venues, while Wild Horse Nine targets $5 million to $7 million across 1,000 screens.
Details on the New Releases
Godzilla Minus Zero builds on the success of 2023's Godzilla Minus One, which grossed $57 million domestically and $113 million globally. Produced by Toho and distributed in the U.S. by GKids, the new sequel is the first Japanese production ever filmed for Imax and is directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Meanwhile, The Cat in the Hat features Bill Hader voicing the title character, with direction by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja. Wild Horse Nine stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as two CIA officers, and is directed by Martin McDonagh. Another newcomer, the Indian epic Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, projects a $6 million four-day debut in 1,300 theaters, distributed by Sony.
Context
Box office predictions help studios and theater owners gauge audience demand for major holiday and weekend releases. Franchise sequels and animated films often rely heavily on large-format screens and family audiences to drive early ticket sales.
