Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film will break from Frank Herbert’s books, drawing most of its story from the 1969 sequel novel Dune Messiah. Zendaya told The New York Times that much of the picture stays true to the source material but also includes major departures. Robert Pattinson, who joins as the new character Scytale, warned that only a fan would criticize the changes, calling anyone who does 'kind of crazy.' He added that the script was really cool but complicated, and that the movie turned out to be a grand political and moral fable that focuses on emotion and parenting. Timothée Chalamet said the trilogy’s ending does not lower the bar, noting that Villeneuve simply 'changed the location of the bar' and that the final instalment stands on its own. Florence Pugh returns as Irulan and credits the Dune series with reviving cinema attendance after the pandemic and Hollywood strikes, calling the second film a generational 'Star Wars.' She described the upcoming release as another 'lovely' event for audiences. The film opens on December 18 in theatres worldwide, released by Warner Bros. and Legendary, and will share its opening weekend with 'Avengers: Doomsday,' which industry analysts expect to set a new single‑weekend box‑office record. The first Dune earned $410 million in 2021 despite simultaneous streaming, while the 2024 sequel made $714 million on an exclusive theatrical run. Cast members hope the movie will keep the movie‑going experience alive for a new generation.

Context

The Dune franchise has become a rare blockbuster that consistently draws large crowds, showing that sci‑fi epics can still dominate theatres even after years of streaming and strike disruptions.
