The blockbuster movie "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" brought a huge financial lift to Sony for the quarter that ended on September 30. Sony Pictures Entertainment reported sales of $3.23 billion, which is a 37 percent rise, and an operating income of $488 million. That income mark is a 527 percent increase compared to the same time last year.

Revenue Breakdown

The film drove theatrical revenue for the period up to $1.28 billion, marking an 11-fold jump from the previous year. At the same time, the television productions segment saw revenue drop by 45 percent to $483 million. The movie itself opened wide on July 31 and pulled in $2.52 billion globally this summer, making it the third-highest grossing film in history behind the original "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame."

Overall Earnings

Across the entire company for Sony's second fiscal quarter of 2026, total revenue reached 3.429 trillion yen, or $21.5 billion, for a 10 percent gain. Net income hit 450 billion yen, or $2.8 billion, representing a 44 percent jump. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Motion Picture Group, spoke about the film at France's Lumière Summit in September, calling it a relatable human and emotional story rather than a traditional superhero film. The movie stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ, and Sony used a currency conversion rate of $1 to 159.3 yen for the report.

Context

Major movie releases from popular franchises often generate massive quarterly spikes for entertainment conglomerates through box office ticket sales and related merchandise. Studio earnings rely heavily on a few major blockbuster titles each year to balance out drops in other divisions like television production.
