Democrats Sweep 2026 Midterms in Historic Rout Against Republicans
Reported by Siddharth Deshmukh (Staff Writer) · CNBC - Top News ·
Democrats have pulled off a historic midterm rout, sweeping seven Senate seats, at least 24 House districts, five governorships, and 12 state legislative chambers. Associated Press data shows Republicans have not flipped a single Democratic-held congressional seat, governorship, or state legislature. GOP pickups are mostly limited to two newly redrawn House districts and potentially Maine's 2nd District, as noted by FiftyPlusOne head of research Mary Radcliffe.
Key Gains Across States
In Kansas, voters picked their first Democratic U.S. senator since 1932, ending a 94-year losing streak. Democrats also defeated three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott in Texas and won a Texas Senate seat that stayed out of party hands since 1988. Additional Republican Senate seats fell in Iowa, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine, and North Carolina. Gubernatorial upsets happened in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, and Nevada—all states won by President Donald Trump in 2024—giving Democrats a majority of U.S. governorships for the first time since 2010.
Statehouse Overhauls
State capitols faced massive shifts as long-standing Republican majorities crumbled. Democrats took control of the Texas House for the first time in over twenty years, flipped both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature, and won the North Carolina House after 16 years. In Pennsylvania, Democrats grabbed the state Senate for the first time since before 1994, taking complete control of the state government. They also reclaimed lower chambers in Michigan and Minnesota. Unofficial results in Arizona showed Democrats taking both legislative chambers for the first time in roughly 60 years. Even where Republicans kept majorities, Democrats broke their veto-proof supermajorities in Florida, Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri, marking the worst GOP statehouse reckoning since the 1974 Watergate aftermath, according to the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
Context
These midterm election results dramatically shift the political balance of power across both federal and state governments in the United States. Midterm elections traditionally serve as a referendum on the sitting president's party, though waves of this magnitude are rare in modern American politics.
